Movin' After an incredibly long absence, I have decided to start writing a blog again...but not here.
My new blog can be found here
See you on the other side... | | Wednesday, July 20th, 2005 | | 5:08 pm |
Yesterday's random foreigner at the airport: a rabbi who travels around inspecting food processing plants to make sure they're kosher. Sat down and had a mango shake with him. It was quite tasty. We chit-chatted for awhile-he told me, for example, that he has 8 kids and his friend has 14. I can't even imagine. I'm heading up to Kawaminami tonight for a meeting about the upcoming Kawaminami summer festival. <a href="http://www.uofr.net/~esnook>The yes yes y'all </a> will be performing along with some other groups. I'm really looking forward to it. Last year we were supposed to appear, but the whole event was cancelled due to a typhoon. Here's hoping we have good weather this year... | | Sunday, July 17th, 2005 | | 5:25 pm |
Ending up going to a club event put on by some guys I know last night-was relatively fun, but I only got about 5 hours of sleep, seeing as how I had work today. At least I have tomorrow off...pretty standard day at work-running around checking in with everyone, working in the gift shop, helping out at the information desk, and helping lost foreigners (today's lost foreigner: a French lawyer-who was actually a really nice guy). Saw a t-shirt today that read "no shoes, no shirt, no juicy". Tired... | | Friday, July 8th, 2005 | | 6:18 pm |
変なお客さんいっぱい!
So...another day, another 112.08 yen. Was walking through the lobby today when suddenly this guy said "hey you! Sit down for a second". So I did. He says "yeah, lately I've been getting a lot of email to my cellphone-but it's all in English, so I don't know what it's talking about. He pulls out his cellphone and shows me an example mail. I glance at his phone and the first word that I see is "erection". Yeah...viagra spam. "What's this mean?" I told him it was an email hawking...medicine. Yeah, that's it. Random. Also, when i was at the information desk today this guy came up and just started doing magic tricks. It was...interesting. I have tomorrow and Sunday off. Thank god. I could use the break. | | Monday, July 4th, 2005 | | 6:22 pm |
Two interesting things from work today: I was walking around saying good morning to everyone when one of the sorta-higher-ups asked me if I could help her train some new part-time employees. She was supposed to go through the employee manual with them, but she had to go conduct job interviews, so...I got to review the employee manual with them (zzz). Still, it's interesting-I'm gald they trust me enough to let me teach people all about working at the airport by myself-even though I've only been working here for 3 months. I was at the information desk today when an American woman showed up. She was asking about buying tickets to get to the international airport in Osaka so she could fly back to the U.S.-she's from Atlanta, it turns out. She just arrived in Japan about two weeks ago, and speaks no Japanese. Her father died suddenly, so...she's going back to the U.S. I helped her get a ticket and showed her how to catch the train back to where she lives, and what train to take tomorrow to get her to the airport in time. I'll meet her at the airport tomorrow when she comes-help her check it, make sure she gets to the gate alright, etc. Not that it's that difficult, but...just to make sure-it's the least I can do, I guess. | | Thursday, June 30th, 2005 | | 5:27 pm |
Been awhile...I'z been busy, as usual. Last night I had to go to a going away party for this guy I've only met a few times. $45 down the drain...food wasn't even that good. Went home and watched some 24 before heading to bed. Didn't get a good night's sleep at all though. It's pretty hot here currently-in the 90s everyday. I have A/C in my apt., but...most air conditioners in Japan are operated by remote control. Mine is, and I can't find the remote. There aren't any buttons on the actual air conditioner, so...I can't use my A/C. Which means that it's really really hot. I tore my apt. apart the other day looking for the remote-no dice. My apartment really isn't that spacious, so I'm not sure where it could be hiding. Gotta find that thing before I melt. | | Friday, June 24th, 2005 | | 8:42 am |
Two things-One work related, one music related At the gift shop where I've been working lately we take orders for stuff to be shipped-customers who don't want to carry stuff home can have it shipped via the Japanese equivalent of UPS. Anyway, I was talking to a customer who wanted to ship things to Saitama (near Tokyo), which takes two days from here. The customer says "two days? It takes that long?" "Yes," I reply, "Saitama is kind of far from here". "Oh...but not as far away as the U.S., huh? Hahaha" he says. Ok...so...I am from the U.S., but...he just assumed that I was an made a joke about it. What if I was Canadian? I thought about saying "actually, I'm from the U.K." to him, but...I let it go. In other news, I finally got my soundcard, and recorded the remix. You can check it out here | | Tuesday, June 21st, 2005 | | 5:36 pm |
luau anyone?
The tourism association of Miyazaki is planning a mini Hawaiian festival, to take place over 3 days in August. They have enlisted the help of Kumu Nani Lim Yap and Kumu Leialoha Lum Amina (two sisters who are the Michael Jordans of hula dancing). The tourism association whipped up a job contract for them, which of course they needed to be written in English, so...that's one thing I got to do today. Other than that I had my usual combination of working in gift shops/hanging out at information. Next up: deciding what to eat for dinner. And once I've decided that, figuring out how to procure such foods, seeing as how I don't have any food in my apt. currently. Actually, that's not true. Maybe I'll just start with grilled cheese, and wing it from there. Yeah, that sounds nice and simple. | | Monday, June 20th, 2005 | | 6:01 pm |
My first repeat customer
Ah....work. As usual. Had yesterday off, but I'm still not recovered from the party Saturday night. More on that later...so I started out spending quite a bit of time at work at this one gift shop, but I'm now working at a different one. The other day this woman came up to me and started talking to me, saying, "oh, you work here now?" So, she remembered seeing me before at a different gift shop. I think it's interesting that she remembers me. Granted, I stick out because I'm the only blonde foreigner working at the airport, but...anyway, she asked me if I was going to be working in the gift shop in August-that's the next time that she's going to be in Miyazaki. Maybe I'll meet her again in August, and I can say "ohisashiburi!" (long time no see). | | Thursday, June 16th, 2005 | | 7:58 pm |

I bring the shit that's beyond bizarre/Like Ms. Piggy mmmmmwah
Another day at work winding down-first English conversation class went relatively well-it seems like everyone just wants to relax, hang out, and learn some English-which is good. Low key is definately good. Next week I have to help them to review all the English they learned in Middle and High School. 6 years of English packed into a 1 1/2 hour course. Uh....we'll see how that goes. I get to go home in about half an hour, which means that I get to drive, which is cool. I missed just driving places. Helps that the speakers in my new car bump ;) I'll be on Wes's radio show tomorrow-there's another charity club event on Saturday, so we'll be plugging that. We'll also be DJing a bit. I should probably practice a bit tonight...considering using my patented "Ch-check it out" remix using the backing music from "lose my breath". It's pretty cool but kinda hard to pull off. If I ever get my friggin' sound card in the mail I'll record it and upload it... | | 8:22 am |
Car stuff-I bought a car, but it's located in Saito-roughly 30 min away by car. It was a big hassle trying to get all the paperwork filled out, shuffled back and forth between here and there, etc. Currently I'm going to work by riding my bike to the station, then taking the train down. The rainy season is fast approaching, and I don't think that suits, bikes, and torrential downpours make for a very good combination. So I wanted to get ahold of the car as soon as possible. I got yesterday off to fill out paperwork and whatnot. I had to go to city hall and the real estate office to deal with parking and whatnot. Around 5pm the guy from the car shop called, saying that although the paperwork wasn't done, he would let me pick the car up and drive it around. Except that he had something to do at 6:30pm. I raced home on my bike, grabbed my license, raced to the bus stop, and caught the bus to Saito. Got there right around 6:30. Grabbed my car, drove back to the city. The car is nice...roomy sedan. I'll post some pics soon. In work news, I have to teach the airport staff English-10 students at a time. The first class starts today. We'll see how it goes... | | Monday, June 13th, 2005 | | 5:21 pm |
Went drinking with some friends last night. They all had the day off today, but I didn't, of course. We started at around 11pm, which is about when I usually go to bed-oh well. At sometime after 2am they decided to go to karaoke-I wanted to go, but I knew I had to call it a night. So I went home and crashed. One of the people I was out with called me at 6:30 in the morning to make sure I was up (I was). She said "ok, glad to know you're awake. We're going to bed now." So I got ready for work, as usual. Spent the morning in the gift shop, but spent the afternoon teaching. There are new part-time workers starting, and I had to lead them in job training today. So I was helping them practice wrapping gifts, fill out delivery slips, and showing them how to use the register. Even though I'm not sure myself regarding a few things-I have to pretend that I know exactly what's going on at all times, and teach new employees. It's interesting... | | Friday, June 10th, 2005 | | 5:48 pm |
have you seen my keys I dropped half a year ago? And other ridiculous questions
Another day at work, woo-hah. A New Zealand couple who live and work in Miyazaki scared the hell out of the staff of the toy shop by asking them if they knew where the car keys they had lost somewhere in the airport last January were. The staff quickly called me over, and I proceeded to escort the couple to the information desk (where lost items are kept). Unfortunately, there was no record of any keys being found last January. Apart from that nothing particularly interesting happened. I'm going to a wedding tomorrow. A friend of mine from Kawaminami (where I used to live) is getting married here in the city-this means a lot of friends that I don't see too often anymore will be coming to the city tomorrow, which is cool. I'm giving the couple the standard 30,000 yen (roughly $280). You give money instead of gifts at a Japanese wedding, right. And you're not supposd to give money that is a number easially divisible by 2, because you don't want the couple to split up, of course! Should be fun, though it's supposed to rain tomorrow, and I'll be going by bike. Blah. Tonight I'm going to shoot pool with some guys from work. One of them lived in Vancouver for two years, and the other one does a lot of travelling-he just got back from backpacking around Europe, actually. I'm so jealous. One of these years I'll get out there... | | Thursday, June 9th, 2005 | | 4:45 pm |
movement
So I've been getting to work by first riding my bike to the station (12 min) and then catching the train to the airport (15 min)). I don't mind it really, but the rainy season is fast approaching...bikes, suits, and torrential downpours do not a good combination make. Fortunately, I bought a car yesterday-though I won't be able to get it for another week. In other exciting news, I'm finally getting internet at my place. Today-Thank god...I'm looking forward to just chilling this evening, surfing, mailing, chatting, whatever. I was out late at a going away party last night, and I have stuff going on tomorrow, Sat., and Sun. night, so I think I should just take it easy. Nothing particularly exciting happened at work today. Though I did get to try a type of mango that's really expensive. We sell them at the airport-$80 for one large-sized mango. It was quite tasty, but I'm not sure it was $80-tasty. | | Wednesday, June 8th, 2005 | | 8:45 am |

| | 8:28 am |
At work, as usual-I arrived back in Japan on March 7th, was in my own apt. by the end of March, but I still don't have internet there, so...I check mail and whatnot at work, when I can. Speaking of work, on April 1st I started a new job working for the Miyazaki airport. My official duties include helping lost foreigners and teaching English to the staff at the airport. That doesn't really keep me too busy though, considering that not many foreigners come through the airport, and I only teach English once a week (actually, that class hasn't even started yet). So I keep myself busy by working at information and working at the gift shops in the airport. I was working at a gift shop where I sold a lot of squid, sea urchin, and cold miso soup, but now I'm working at a different gift shop-the top seller there is mentaiko, which are fish eggs cured with red pepper. I've been doing Japanese calligraphy for awhile now, and my work actually is allowing me to continue doing it-a few people in the design department study it because they have to do it at work occasionally-they invited me to take part in it-so every Wednesday around noon I'll be heading out for a few hours to do calligraphy-I must say I'm quite happy about this. Aight, gotta go to the gift shop. | | Thursday, January 13th, 2005 | | 12:32 pm |
いよいよ
Well, Mariko got up and we waited until 6am or so...no dice. So we went to sleep, but she got up around 8am...I woke up shortly after that, made some phonecalls...the luggage finally arrived at noon. So now I'm gonna crash for an hour or so before we have to head out. | | 3:30 am |
まだ届いてないなぁ...
Yeah, so...happy new year. A bit late, I realize. I'm currently hosting my Japanese mom. My parents met her when they came to visit me in Japan over 2 years ago, and now it's our turn to play host. She arrived safe and sound 2 days ago now, but her luggage has yet to arrive. The airport said that they would deliver her luggage at 3:30am. So...here I am, waiting for her luggage to show up. | | Thursday, December 9th, 2004 | | 1:16 am |
郷に入ると...
Back in GA...here for the first times in 2 years. Well...I'm already bored. I can't drive, which doesn't really help matters much...hopefully I'll have a new GA drivers license by...early next week. So currently I'm crashing at my parents house with no way to escape. I feel like I'm 14 again. Sigh... We were driving home from the airport, and we finally got to a place that I recognized-about 15 minutes away from where I used to live. So we're definately in the local area-I recognized where we were by my surroundings, but I couldn't tell where we were going. When I imagined the road, stretching out in front of us-I knew that those roads would end at our driveway, but I couldn't visualize the route in my head. I just knew that there was a series of turns, and that eventually we would end up back at 160 Plantation Dr. An odd feeling. Jet lag hasn't been too bad...got home from the airport at around 6pm, went to be at 10, woke up at 5:30, but then dozed off until 8 or so. Took a nap, unfortunately, from 4pm-8pm today. Not so good. So here I am, writing this at 1:30am, wide awake. Pleasantville is randomly, which is a movie that I've been wanting to watch again for awhile now. So that's cool. Yeah, so American TV...it's been awhile. In 5 minutes I saw commericals for the clapper and chia pet. Hell yeah. |
